Oral Surgery Instructions prior to tooth extraction or implant placement

  1. If you have an artificial joint, such as a knee or hip replacement, please discuss with your orthopedic surgeon whether or not you require prophylactic antibiotics prior to dental surgery.
  2. If you take a blood thinner such as Warfarin, Plavix, or Eliquis, please ensure that OSPC is aware of your medication in case an adjustment needs to be made prior to your oral surgery appointment.

Instructions for Office Oral Surgery with Sedation

  1. The patient should not eat or drink for six (6) hours prior to surgery, unless otherwise instructed. Failure to observe this rule may lead to serious anesthetic complications.
  2. Patients who wear contact lenses should leave them out or bring their lens case and remove the lenses prior to surgery. Female patients are requested to remove makeup prior to surgery.
  3. Patients should plan to wear loose-fitting clothing to permit access to the area where anesthesia is to be administered at the level of the elbow.
  4. Whoever accompanies the patient should plan to remain in the office through the surgery. Normally, office procedures are short – 30 minutes to 1 hour – and usually there is little delay in departure. Surgery will not be permitted unless the escort is in the office.
  5. Following sedation, patients should not plan to drive an automobile, operate dangerous machinery, or undertake responsible business matters until the next morning.
