Dr. Schwarzkopf grew up in Adel, Iowa and has lived most of his life in Iowa. After graduating from Adel High School, he completed college at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He continued towards his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree at Creighton University School of Dental Science. There he received a special recognition award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He also achieved membership in Omicron Kappa Upsilon Honorary Dental Society, Alpha Sigma Nu National Jesuit Honor Society, and the Alpha Omega Fraternity Award for the highest scholastic standing throughout his dental studies.

Dr. Schwarzkopf went into post-graduate training with his internship at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, Texas where he completed a one year program in anesthesiology. He went on to complete his specialty training residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery through the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School at Dallas, including Parkland Memorial Hospital, Children’s Medical Center, Presbyterian Hospital, and St. Luke’s in Dallas, and John Peter Smith Hospital in Forth Worth.

Currently, Dr. Schwarzkopf holds staff positions at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center and Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. He has served as Dental section chief at Mercy and is currently the section chief at Iowa Methodist Medical Center. He is a past-president of the Iowa Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. He is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology. He holds membership status in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, the American Dental Association, the Iowa and Des Moines Dental Associations. He is a current cardholder from the American Heart Association for Advanced Cardiac Life Support.

To remain current with changing surgical techniques in oral and maxillofacial surgery, Dr. Schwarzkopf regularly attends surgical seminars, workshops, and conferences.

He is active with family activities with Patty, his wife, their twin daughters, Elizabeth and Kristin, and son, Aaron. He also enjoys racquetball, golf, water and snow skiing, and music. Their family resides in West Des Moines. They are members of Sacred Heart Church and their children attended Dowling Catholic High School and Creighton University and currently attend DMACC and Washington University.
